Herbal medicines – Identification and Analysis (#238)
The Therapeutic Goods Administration, Office of Laboratories and Scientific Services (OLSS) test herbal medicines to ensure their quality and safety. Testing occurs either as part of a product survey, in response to a safety or quality alert, or as result of complaints from health practitioners or members of the public. Testing of herbal medicines is often more complex and variable, compared to pharmaceutical analysis, due to the complexity of chemical constituents in herbal materials. This poster highlights some of the considerations and methodologies employed in the analysis of herbal medicines. Three examples of herbal medicines that have been examined by the OLSS are: Aristolochia ssp; Ginkgo biloba; and Aconitum spp.
